It delves deeper into various topics and techniques, discussing nuances involved in the role of an experienced safety diver. The course also emphasizes physical tests, safety drills, and video reviews. Prerequisites include having 200 experience points.

Envisioning a Safer Competitive Realm

The implementation of AIDA’s experience point system allows new Safety Divers in freediving to build their careers in a competitive environment. This system values practical knowledge and recognizes experience, opening doors to new opportunities. Certified AIDA Competition Safety Freedivers can accumulate experience points by being official safeties in AIDA competitions. In the future, only certified AIDA Competition Safety Freedivers will be eligible to participate in AIDA competitions. The level and number of experience points will be considered when selecting safeties for events like the AIDA World Championships. This ensures a dedicated and skilled safety network that prioritizes the well-being of freedivers worldwide.

Accumulating Experience Points

To objectively measure and recognize the expertise of AIDA Safety Divers, a new experience point system has been established, mirroring the framework used for AIDA Judges. At the heart of this system lies a transparent and structured way to accrue credits through active participation in AIDA-sanctioned events. These points are pivotal for Safety Divers aiming to qualify for more prestigious competitions.

Experience points are earned based on the roles and duties performed by Safety Divers during competitions. There are two primary classifications in the AIDA competition announcement system: “Performance Zone Safeties” and “Warm-up Zone Safeties.”

Progression Path for AIDA Pool Competition Safety Freedivers

• Depth Safety level C: 100 competition points

Freediving UAE’s underwater photographer taking home the second place award at Digital Online 2023 https://freedivinguae.com/2023/06/01/freediving-uae-underwater-photographer-taking-home-the-second-place-award-at-digital-online-2023/ Thu, 01 Jun 2023 12:07:07 +0000 https://freedivinguae.com/?p=56428 At the digital underwater photography competition of the United Arab Emirates Diving Association DIGITAL ONLINE Awards 2023, Jenny Rehush, resident underwater photographer of Freediving UAE took second place in the “Creative underwater photo” category.

The DIGITAL ONLINE underwater photography competition is designed to develop human interaction with the underwater environment, emphasize the beauty of its flora and fauna, and discover new promising underwater photographers at the local and international levels.

“This is the second time I’m participating in the Digital online underwater photography and film competition and for the first time my photo took second place” says Jenny Regush. — This is one of many photos from the “Underwater Breakfast” series, taken during the Dubai International Boat Show 2023. I was there as a member of the Freediving UAE team, along with Australian mermaid Carly Athawes, who took off her mermaid tail for this photoshoot. After finishing our morning coffee we had another cup of coffee for our “Underwater breakfast”.

Reading about underwater photography, you may come across stories that emphasize the challenges of capturing breathtaking moments, that is mainly referred to majestic creatures such as sharks, whales, and other marine life. However, working with professional mermaid Carly Athawes, proofs that stunning underwater images can be captured in just half an hour. This underwater photoshoot took place at a unique venue, a pool with glass wall, so that Boat Show visitors could watch the process. It’s important to state that taking picture through the glass wall is not considered underwater photography, however everyone was interested in how you can drink coffee or eat croissant underwater”

The DIGITAL ONLINE 2023 underwater photography competition celebrated its fourteenth anniversary this year. It was introduced by the UAE Diving Association (EDA) in 2009 for local photographers, and since 2012, underwater videographers can also take part in the new one. Digital Online goal is to keep our underwater world visible, demonstrating its hidden beauty and importance to all life on Earth through the power of its ecosystems.

Yuriy could not love the sea more if he was born in it – and we think maybe he was… His love for the sea is only bested by his love of freediving. And he is the best in town at teaching his favorite pastime. Yuriy hates “banana-divers”, as much as being nibbled at by marine creatures during freefalling. He is known for his terrible sailing techniques and his lousy attire. Yuriy also happens to be a certified Apnea Academy, AIDA and PADI instructor, as well as an AIDA Judge.

Faisal Jawad Hassan

World Record Holder

The record had been a long-standing ambition of Mr Hassan, who learned to scuba dive to assist with his personal recovery following the accident. ‘After the car accidents I had, the first thing I did was challenging my fears,’ said Hassan. ‘I chose to learn how to dive. After I dove I felt that I am free under the water,’ he said, adding: ‘Diving can set me free from sadness and hopelessness and made feel free.’

What colours do fish see? https://freedivinguae.com/2022/12/02/what-colours-do-fish-see/ Fri, 02 Dec 2022 11:15:11 +0000 https://freedivinguae.com/?p=48096 When you are diving, have you ever wondered what colours the fish see? Do they see you coming from a mile away or are their eyes not as good as yours? Let’s take a look at what colours fish see and if they have good eyesight.

Just like humans, fish have eyes. In fact, fish eyes are very similar to human eyes. They have a cornea, pupil, iris, and retina. Fish also have rods and cones in their eyes which allow them to see light and colour. However, the number of rods and cones in fish eyes varies depending on the type of light they need to see in their environment. For instance, fish that live in dark waters will have more rods than cones because they need to be able to see in low light conditions. On the other hand, fish that live in bright waters will have more cones than rods because they need to be able to see colour.

So, what colours can fish see?

It depends on the type of water they live in and the number of cone cells in their eyes. For example, goldfish have four cone cells while human beings have three. This difference allows goldfish to see more colours than humans can. On the other hand, it is believed that fish can only see blue and green. This is because these are the colours that penetrate water the best. Red is the first colour to disappear when light enters water so it is unlikely that fish can see this colour.

There are also some fish that cannot see colour at all. These fish rely on other cues to help them find food or mate. For example, some fish use smell to find food while others use polarised light to navigate through murky waters.

Can Fish See in The Dark?

Some fish can see in complete darkness while others cannot see in dim light. For example, catfish have cells called tapeta that reflect any available light into their eyes. This helps them see in low light conditions.

Conclusion:

So, what colours do fish see? It depends on the type of water they live in and the species of fish. Some fish can see a wider range of colours than humans can while others cannot see colour at all.

Underwater photo shoot. Pool vs. Sea https://freedivinguae.com/2022/07/19/underwater-photo-shoot-pool-vs-sea/ Tue, 19 Jul 2022 09:55:25 +0000 https://freedivinguae.com/?p=47351 Freediving UAE has in-house professional underwater photographer.

Majority requests for underwater photo shoot involve taking pictures in the open sea. However being underwater for the first time might be a bit tricky for beginners. An underwater model should not only be able to hold his/her breath for a few seconds but also pose for the camera in the meantime.

Let’s compare underwater shoot in the pool and ocean/sea.

The pool helps to adapt to the underwater environment, it has a few advantages:

  • clear and calm water without any currents and waves;
  • it is important to feel the ground under your feet and the pool serves this purpose;
  • is is much safer for the first shooting in clothes, especially in a long dress;
  • it is easier to perform a few test dives to get used to the keep your eyes open underwater without a nose clip;
  • it is easier to float calmly on the surface for breath up and recovery breathing;
  • all of the above points will help you to have a better control over your breathing muscles that is essential for a good underwater photo;
  • pool is a controlled environment where it is easier to arrange any artistic set up.

Underwater photo shoot

Shooting in the open sea is much more challenging:

  • currents and waves make it more difficult to relax before and after the dive, reducing the dive time and making posing very hard;
  • visibility is often poor;
  • wearing a dress or other clothes makes it difficult to move in the water;
  • clothes underwater become heavy and it is difficult to move in them even for the experienced swimmers;
  • it hurts to open the eyes in salt water. in addition when salt water enters your nose it also causes severe irritation;
  • relaxation of facial muscles in salt water, especially around the eyes, achieved through many trainings’ sessions;
  • open water underwater shooting requires holding your breath for a much longer period of time.

After the first photo session in the pool, you can move on to the shallow part of the reef. For the perfect first photo shoot at sea, we advise you to wear a swimsuit with long fins and a mask. This makes it easier to move underwater and gives more time to take a photo.

Together with us, you will safely learn how to exhale underwater and take the best pose for the photo. Just after a few dives, you will know how to properly move and pose underwater, and you’ll get the best artistic photo anyone can imagine!
