Molchanovs Wave 2 Overview

In this intermediate course, you learn how to train your body for freediving and how to hold your breath for more than two and a half minutes. Topics include pre-dive optimization, improvement of Frenzel equalization, and introduction to the dolphin kick.

Molchanovs Wave 2

Course Goals

  • Fine-tune freediving techniques learned in Wave 1;
  • Learn and apply the Frenzel maneuver.;
  • Learn to apply the free fall: Efficient diving technique using negative buoyancy;
  • Students will have the confidence to freedive with a buddy of equivalent experience;
  • Students should also finish the course with a clear idea of how to further improve their freediving ability and the steps they need to take to do so.

Theory

The theory component will include the following items:

  • The student may complete the online materials and read the manual before sessions with the instructor;
  • It is at the discretion of the instructor to conduct theory sessions;
  • If no theory sessions are being conducted, at least one knowledge review (KR) session must be conducted;
  • The instructor will check the exam scores of the student and discuss all missed answers before a second attempt.

Dry Skill Session

  • Repeat skills from Lap 1 / Wave 1 course: Body Scan, One Full Breath, Recovery Breathing;
  • Introduce and practice the Frenzel equalization technique, including P-T-K locks;
  • Introduce and practice small reverse packs to combine with Frenzel;
  • Introduce mindfulness for all freediving disciplines, especially static apnea.

Pool / Confined Water Sessions

Session 1: STA

  • Repeat all skills from the Lap 1 / Wave 1 course: Relaxation position, safe “exit procedure,” and buddy procedures including safety checks, providing adequate support for a buddy experiencing LMC, and rescue procedure for a buddy experiencing a blackout;
  • Perform a static breath-hold of at least 2.5 min. safely with a buddy.

 

Session 2: DYN

  • Repeat neutral buoyancy check for DYNB (with bi-fins), the student has to make a correct call if they need to adjust weights;
  • Repeat and fine-tune all DYNB technique skills from Lap 1 / Wave 1: Head position, body posture, finning technique, and turn(s);
  • Repeat buddy procedures, including sideways fin swimming and correct positioning of the buddy when the diver ends their dive;
  • Repeat rescue procedure for a buddy experiencing an LMC and blackout;
  • Perform a DYNB dive of at least 50m safely with a buddy;
  • Continue to fine-tune DNF technique;
  • Perform a DNF dive of at least 35m safely with a buddy;
  • Introduce DYN monofin technique. with short pool training fins.

Open Water Sessions

Open water session 1

  • Introduce/repeat usage and safe handling of the lanyard;
  • Repeat surface exhale test;
  • Introduce and practice the neutral buoyancy check;
  • Repeated dives FIM and CWT to 20m with a lanyard, focusing on good technique;
  • Students buddy each other on all dives;
  • Introduce free fall, start with setting the line slightly deeper (maximum 23m). Practice FIM and CWT.

 

Open water session 2

  • Repeat the neural buoyancy check;
  • Continue practicing the free fall;
  • Perform a self-rescue: No-mask ascent from 10m depth;
  • Introduce and practice CNF dives to moderate depths. Not deeper than 20m.

 

Open water session 3

  • Repeat neutral buoyancy check as a warm-up dive;
  • Repeat FIM and CWT dives and set the line progressively deeper;
  • Students buddy each other on all dives to minimum 15m;
  • Perform an open water rescue procedure from 15m depth;
  • Continue practicing CNF dives to moderate depths.

 

Open water session 4

  • Repeat neutral buoyancy check as a warm-up dive;
  • Perform repeated FIM and CWT dives between 24-30m with minimum 4m of free fall, in an appropriate dive time;
  • Perform repeated CNF dives to 15-20m.

The price for the Molchanovs Wave 2 - Advanced Course with Freediving UAE is AED 3,000.

This includes pool access and dive center access, all necessary equipment and a minimum of 16 hours of instruction by a qualified instructor. The price also includes processing of the certification (refer to Post Course Certification section below). The price also includes insurance for the duration of the course.

Prerequisites

  • Be at least 18 years old (16 years old with parental consent);
  • Be in good physical health (i.e. no pre-existing medical conditions, otherwise, a note from a doctor certifying that the student is fit to take part in the activity is required);
  • Be certified Wave 1 for Wave 2 course;
    • Or have passed crossover evaluation for Wave 1;
    • Or be certified Lap 1 for a Lap 2 or Online (T) 2 course;
  • Preferably completed Base 1 training (or an equivalent training program).

Certification Requirements

To get a Wave 2 certification, a freediver must successfully complete all skills as outlined above, including the written exam.

If a student did not pass the certification requirements, the student may participate in training sessions catered towards helping them improve on their current skill level to pass the desired certification.
